So I got a call from this number.

The lady on the line asked me if I was Nandini Bahri Dhanda and confirmed my cell number.

She said she was calling from the Telecom Department and that my phone would be disconnected in 48 hours.

Before I could ask why, she transferred me to another person - a man who very politely informed me of the same.

I must add at this stage that I picked up my phone only because I was expecting a call from my gamla wala (flower-pot person), who occasionally calls from his wife’s or father’s number as well.

But when Saburjan Bibi informed me she was calling from the Telecom Department, I knew this was a scam call.

Anyway, the man at the other end informed me that my phone number was being misused in the UK and that they had no option but to close it down unless I paid ₹25,000 until the matter was further investigated.

By then, I had lost all my patience and said rather angrily,
“Do you think I’m a bewakoof? If you’re from the Telecom Department, then let me tell you I’m sitting in a RAW office and they are sending the unknown gunmen after you. Right now. And they are not going to spare that Bibi either.”

The phone was banged down pretty fast after that.

I had half a mind to call Bibi again to reiterate the threat.
