1. MEITY sent WhatsApp a legal notice without actual legal basis to either distract attention from something else (E20?) or just because Home Ministry asked its subordinate ministry MEITY (in practice, not in theory) to do something about WhatsApp usernames.

Useful legal keywords thrown in - IT Act, Section 79, IT Rules, maybe even DPDP Act for good measure. Whatever looks officious even if it doesn't make sense. Who reads before drafting anyway.

Ran it through ChatGPT for spelling punctuation and sentence construction errors so US Dept of War read it before WhatsApp did. Actually they have other more mean-full things to do. "Make it sound strict", and leaked it to the media before Telegram and Signal got it. Someone got at exclusive. Everyone covered it after that. Herd behaviour.

2. WhatsApp is already in court regarding traceability. After some regulatory ping-pong: notice, response, notice, response, meeting where secretary yells at WhatsApp, so that he can inform Home Ministry he yelled at Whatsapp... if eventually this goes to court, MEITY needs to show that it didn't only send a notice to WhatsApp, it sends notices to Signal and Telegram.

Except that Telegram has had usernames since 2014. Signal got usernames in early 2024. But how does it matter in whimsical-bureaucracy-land.

Twitter is busy, TV channels have new headlines, newspapers have opeds (including mine), online media uses AI to write anyway.
