The West humiliated Russia in the 1990s. This war is the consequence.’
I’ve heard this in every language, from every podium. It is history rewritten backwards.
Recall what actually happened to defeated Russia: no occupation. No reparations. No tribunal. It kept its nuclear arsenal and its UN veto. Its debts were forgiven and refinanced. It was handed IMF billions and a seat at the G8 — a club of democracies admitting a wounded autocracy out of hope.
Now recall an actually humiliated nation: Germany, 1945. Occupied. Partitioned. Cities in ash, leaders hanged, guilt taught to its children by law.
Germany became the most peaceful democracy in Europe. Russia became this.
So spare me the humiliation theory. Russia was not humiliated after the Cold War. It was indulged — and it read every kindness as weakness, every gift as tribute.
The grievance was never mistreatment. The grievance was lost dominion.
Empires do not mourn their wounds. They mourn their slaves.

Brick by brick, we are collapsing the foundations of Russia's war economy.
Today, we are presenting our proposals for a 21st sanctions package against Russia.
This includes a temporary freeze of the Russian oil price cap and designations of institutions used by Moscow to generate revenues and circumvent EU sanctions.
It will target banks, weapons manufacturers, oil traders, refineries, and crypto operators in third countries.
Open Letter
To the President of the Russian Federation
From the President of Ukraine
When you came to power in Russia more than 26 years ago, many people in Ukraine viewed you positively. That is how it was. But that is now in the past.
Now, the overwhelming majority of Ukrainians view it positively that our long-range drones paid a visit to the opening of your forum in St. Petersburg, covering a distance of more than 1,000 kilometers. As you know very well, that distance is not the limit of our capabilities.
Russia’s reckless drone incursion into Romania shows once again Russia’s willingness to escalate. Germany stands with our NATO Allies. The incident once again underscores the need for strong NATO posture on the Eastern flank. We are ready to defend every inch of Allied territory.
Last night a Russian drone entered Romanian airspace and hit a residential building, injuring civilians.
Time and again, Russia has shown it has no regard for civilian life, international law, or sovereignty of its neighbours.
We stand with Ukraine, Romania and all NATO allies.
Canada stands with Romania and strongly condemns last night’s reckless Russian drone incursion in Galați, which injured two people. Another escalation in Russia’s unjust war of aggression against Ukraine.
This incident is a serious violation of Romanian airspace and international law by Russia. Canada and our NATO Allies remain ready to defend allied territory.
Finland condemns the Russian drone attack hitting an apartment building in Romania. Russia is crossing another line in its war of aggression against Ukraine.
Finland stands with its ally Romania and continues to support Ukraine to defend itself. The situation is being discussed within the Alliance.
Romania can't go to war with Russia. Nobody sane is asking for that.
What is the common sense action that all countries neighboring Ukraine should have taken since 24 February, 2022 is to cover air defense in western and southern Ukraine along the border so the Ukrainians didn't have to waste resources to defend us too.
That could have been done without fighting the Russians directly.
Romanians hit by Russian drones are in the hospital tonight because Romanian leadership and our allies were weak and indecisive.
The Russian drone crash into apartments in Galați was a blatant and serious violation of Romania’s sovereignty and European airspace.
I spoke with Foreign Minister @oana_toiu this morning to convey the EU’s full solidarity with Romania.
Russia has long ago stopped respecting borders.
Moscow cannot be allowed to breach European airspace with impunity.
EU Foreign Ministers yesterday vowed to ramp up pressure on Russia, increase support for Ukraine, and invest in Europe’s own defence readiness.
I strongly condemn Russian drones striking Romanians in their homes. This is grave.
The Republic of Moldova stands in full solidarity with Romania and wishes a swift recovery to those injured in Galați.
Russia is a danger to all and must be stopped.
Russia’s war of aggression has crossed yet another line.
A Russian drone incursion struck a densely populated area in Romania, injuring civilians.
On EU territory.
We stand in full solidarity with Romania and its people.
As we continue strengthening our security and deterrence, especially on our Eastern border, we will keep increasing the pressure on Russia.
We are preparing a 21st package of sanctions.
🧵 Zelensky said he'd love to know what secret deal Biden struck with Putin on Ukraine in June 2021 in Geneva. Easy to deduce:
1. On Jan 19 2022, President Biden reaffirmed to Putin that the United States will not defend Ukraine when Russia invades. Russia invaded a month later.
The largest attack on Moscow since World War II took place last night.
As far as I can tell, since I’ve been following the war, there has never been such a large number of drones reaching the Moscow Region, nor causing such disruption.
The Moscow Oil Refinery was struck for the third time since the start of the war (it happened once in 2024 and once in 2025), but the success of last night’s attack is surprising even to me. Why do I say this:
To protect the May 9 parade, the Moscow region and the capital itself had four rings of air defense, consisting of over 300 air defense systems of all types (Pantsir, Buk, Tor, S-300, S-400) along with hundreds of radars, acoustic detection systems, mobile teams in vehicles, and russian spy satellites used for detection—you get the picture: Moscow was the best-protected against air attack location on the planet. There was no longer comparable to 2024 or 2025. The russians have adapted. They understood the danger and adapted. However:
Eight days later, today, multiple waves of Ukrainian drones and cruise missiles breached the russian multi-layered defense (part of which had been dispersed to other regions after the parade) and struck several targets that were considered nearly impossible to hit. Surprising even to me.
At the beginning of the year, I said that Moscow would be hit by Ukrainian ballistic missiles. That hasn’t happened yet (because the FP-7 and FP-9 missile projects are still in development, though I stand by my prediction), but Moscow is already in flames. The Ukrainians are returning the war to the russians, sending it back to their own doorstep.
No, this is not revenge for the 24 people (including 3 children) killed by the Russians two days ago in Kyiv. The Ukrainians are not using these attacks for revenge, but for military and political (read: diplomatic) gain. The russians’ crimes must be avenged through fair justice, and for that, we need the support and pressure of every European citizen on national and European politicians.
The war is returning home, and that is setting Moscow ablaze.
Slava Ukraini!
Applebaum: Putin’s real fear is a Maidan-style street revolution — people against corruption, demanding democracy and Europe.
Liberal-democratic language is explosive inside Russia. That is why he needed to crush Ukraine’s democracy movement. 1/
Прибули разом із першою леді до Румунії.
Сьогодні тут проходить саміт країн «Бухарестської дев’ятки» за участі країн Північної Європи. Заплановані важливі зустрічі на полях саміту.
