Airdrops are dead? No, you're just using it wrong.

Airdrops/ points campaigns are seen in crypto as a form of user acquisition. But post TGE, once incentives are distributed, users/ volume/ TVL dwindles.

What if it's simply a retention problem? Here's a counter example:

@pixels_online, when they started their play-to-airdrop campaign, was already booming with ~130k daily active users. You would expect that post TGE, growth would slow down or stop.

But no, they continued to grow to a peak of 1m daily active users. How is that possible? I thought all crypto users were mercenary degens who rotate to the next yield farm?

It turns out that if you have a good product, airdrops are simply a growth hacking mechanism that aligns ownership with your early supporter community. It gives you a spike in attention that you can use to build momentum.

Pixels continued to roll out pets, their guild system, a new taskboard reward system, and now completely revamped resource economics and skills.

While there's a lot more work ahead in figuring out balance, polish, and new features, it's clear that for Pixels, the airdrop was just the beginning.

Cryptoeconomics are a superpower, and airdrops are far from over, we just need to wield it wisely.

7 months ago, in the tranquil depths of 2023, we discussed with Vitalik on Ethereum culture, backstage of our Web3 Transitions Summit.

We huddled through winters because we felt we belong in an ecosystem that imbibes:
