The philosopher Diogenes was eating lentils for supper. He was seen by Aristippus, who said, 'If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.' Diogenes replied: “Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.”
If you ever get the chance to take the long way, take it. the short way was paved by dull meticulous cowards who cut every green unruly beautiful thing out of the path to make it quicker, and every man who takes it arrives on time with the same glazed vacant punctuality of cattle funneled through a gate. but the long way is still overgrown, and somewhere along it there is a stumbling stupid embarrassing moment that will crack you open like an old fevered egg that finally gives, and what comes out of it will be the dirtiest truest thing you have ever produced. take the long way, take the wrong turns, take the three hour mistake, take the road some sunstruck idiot built into the middle of nowhere, and then sit down in the first wretched forgotten place you find and see what happens
for all you know, this could be your last summer.
as homer wrote, you will never be lovelier than you are right now. so tell her she has a pretty smile. get lean or become a unit. find wonder in boarding the airplane. drink more coffee than you need. walk on the beach until your feet hurt. write your girlfriend a note on a tuesday. waste money because its not all about retirement. pull over at the lookout. ask the uber driver about his life. tell the woman in the elevator you like her shoes and mean it. call your mother. ask the waiter his favorite thing on the menu and order that.
theres so much life in the slow moments, and you sprint past it chasing the next thing. but at any time, in any situation, you can find the good. smile. be happy. recognize it for a one of one life experience. what good is walking around a curmudgeon when tomorrow could be curtains.
for heavens sake, flirt with the world.

In ancient Rome, a man was convicted of eating his wife...
The soldiers arrested him and brought him before Caesar.
"Do you have remorse for your heinous crime?" Caesar asked.
The Roman smiled and shook his head. He looked very happy.
Caesar was shocked.
He told the guards, "To commit such an act is bad enough, but to be happy about it? As a punishment, keep him in chains, and every day make him fight armed opponents, using only the minimum of weapons! Report back to me in a week, we'll see if he's still smiling."
The guards dragged the man off.
He was still smiling.
As they were commanded, each day they made the prisoner fight.
On the first day, armed with only a net and a stick, he fought an opponent with a spear.
The next day, with only a small rope, he fought two swordsmen. And so on, he was forced to fight every day.
At the end of the week, the prisoner was in a real sorry state.
He could barely blink, let alone smile.
The head guard came to Caesar.
"Oh, Caesar, I have come to report on the prisoner. We made him fight each day, using the most basic weapons, like a, er, you know, whaddaya call it?"
"Gladiator?" said Caesar.
The guard snickered, "No, he actually quite regrets it now."
