I've just come back from #Venezuela 🇻🇪 where I spent 2.5 weeks, witnessing the run-up to the presidential vote, and what was arguably the most outrageous election steal in the modern history of Latin America.
I'll share some thoughts below 🧵
Our book 'Informality and Courts: Comparative Perspectives' (Forthcoming, 2024) is available at @EdinburghUP Ed. with Alex Stroh (@unibt) and @BjoernDressel (@ANUCrawford) 16 chapters on the roles of informal institutions and informal relations on courts.

Thanks to @ABCaustralia@abcnews for the opportunity to talk with Philip Clark from ABC Radio Sydney about the Venezuelan crisis - a bit of context, and also comments about the current juncture. Venezuela deserves better.

Just shared this thread in Spanish, now in English - for everyone interested and supportive of pro-democracy movements, the case of Venezuela's opposition win is a major precedent in many different ways. A beacon of hope in an autocratizing world.
"controversias sobre el proceso electoral deben ser dirimidas por la vía institucional. El principio fundamental de la soberanía popular debe ser respetado mediante la verificación imparcial de los resultados"
Vía institucional no puede ser el Poder Judicial, no es independiente
The Venezuelan judiciary unfortunately does not offer a viable institutional pathway to hear appeals regarding the election, much less to 'certify' an election (which is not its prerogative).
In Venezuela's autocracy, the judicial system is not independent and supports Maduro.
Es el mejor movimiento opositor de la historia contemporánea de Venezuela.
No importa si eres chavista, madurista, caprilista, baterista, maquinista o electricista.
Es el movimiento opositor más sofisticado y organizado al que se ha enfrentado el régimen.
¿Cómo crees que va a desarrollarse esta historia viva?

@rcx86 Have not read the book yet, but as an Electronics Engineer it’s clear to me that the majority of developers I work with could elevate their game considerably by understanding the fundamentals of the systems they code on.
