Every great business begins with an idea, but I've learned that ideas alone don't create successful companies. The real question is whether you're solving a problem that people genuinely care about and are willing to pay to solve.
In this episode of Diary of an African Entrepreneur, I share why validation should always come before investment. We explore why so many startups fail, what successful founders do differently, and how you can test demand before committing your time, money, and resources.
If you're launching a startup, developing a new product, or expanding into a new market, this conversation will help you make more informed decisions and build with greater confidence.

What does it really mean to build a business that creates lasting impact?
In this episode of Diary of an African Entrepreneur, I sat down with Osen Iyahen, Founder & CEO of @optimalgreening , for a conversation that goes far beyond entrepreneurship. From a successful career with global organizations like GE and ExxonMobil to founding an organization dedicated to providing clean water, sanitation, and sustainable infrastructure to underserved communities, Osen’s journey is a powerful reminder that leadership is ultimately about solving meaningful problems.
We explored the courage it takes to leave the certainty of corporate success, the realities of building a purpose-driven organization, and why sustainable development must always put people first. One story stood out in particular: how access to clean water transformed an entire community, improving health, creating economic opportunities, and restoring dignity for thousands of people.
For anyone building a business, leading an organization, or simply seeking to make a meaningful contribution, this conversation offers valuable lessons on vision, resilience, leadership, and the power of purpose.
I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. I’d love to hear your biggest takeaway after watching.

In the final episode of our Foundation Phase, I talk about one of the most important habits for building a successful business: delayed gratification.
Many entrepreneurs face constant pressure to take money out of their business as soon as it comes in. But lasting success comes from reinvesting, staying disciplined, and thinking long-term.
In this episode, I break down why it can be difficult to delay rewards, the common traps that hold business owners back, and a practical framework to help you make decisions with your future growth in mind.

One of the greatest challenges many entrepreneurs face is not a lack of knowledge, talent, or expertise. It is the fear of being seen.
Every day, capable founders, professionals, and business owners hold back from sharing what they know because they worry about criticism, judgment, rejection, or not being good enough. They wait for the perfect moment, the perfect message, or the confidence to finally put themselves out there.
The problem is that while they remain hidden, the people who need their insights, solutions, and experiences never get the opportunity to learn from them.
In this episode of Diary of an African Entrepreneur, I explore The Fear of Visibility and why so many talented individuals struggle to share their stories, promote their businesses, and build influence. Drawing on personal experience, entrepreneurship research, African cultural realities, and the work of Brené Brown, I examine the beliefs and social pressures that often keep people in the background even when they have something valuable to offer.
If you have ever struggled to share your expertise, tell your story, or put your work into the world, this episode will challenge the way you think about visibility and encourage you to take the next step.

What if the voice in my head telling me “you don’t belong here” was never proof that I was failing… but proof that I was growing?
In this deeply honest episode of Diary of an African Entrepreneur, I explore the hidden psychological battle many founders, executives, creatives, and high achievers silently fight: Imposter Syndrome.
I talk about the fear of being “found out,” even while succeeding. The strange tension of entering rooms I once prayed for, yet still questioning whether I truly deserve to be there. From business pitches to leadership spaces, funding conversations to moments of visibility, I unpack the internal battles many entrepreneurs carry quietly.
But this episode goes beyond generic motivation. I reflect on the uniquely African realities that intensify imposter syndrome, growing up without visible examples, carrying family expectations, navigating systems not built for us, and trying to lead while still wrestling with self-doubt internally.
This is not just a conversation about mindset.
It is a conversation about identity, leadership, visibility, and the courage to keep showing up while doubt is still speaking.
Because every entrepreneur we admire once walked into a room feeling unqualified… and acted anyway.
If you are building something meaningful, this episode is for you.

I’ve seen many entrepreneurs believe that faith alone will carry a business to success. And while faith is powerful, I’ve come to realize it was never meant to replace planning, responsibility, and execution. One thing that keeps standing out to me is that some of the biggest business failures don’t come from lack of opportunity, but from quietly outsourcing decisions, discipline, and ownership in the name of spirituality.
In this episode of Diary of an African Entrepreneur, I explore The God Factor, the balance between trusting God and taking full responsibility for building what has been placed in my hands. I reflect on how genuine faith can become harmful when it turns into passivity, avoidance, or even an excuse for weak strategy. From pricing mistakes to ignoring customer feedback, from avoiding accountability to blaming timing, I unpack patterns that hold many of us back without us realizing it.
If you are building something, trusting God for growth, or navigating uncertainty, this episode will push you to think differently. I am learning that faith is not the opposite of work, it is the force that should drive it.

If you think the biggest barrier to growing your business is capital, market conditions, or competition, you are not entirely wrong. But I have learned that the real limitation is often mindset.
In this episode of Diary of an African Entrepreneur, I explore the “scarcity trap” — a way of thinking that keeps us stuck in survival mode. Drawing on research by Sendhil Mullainathan and Eldar Shafir, I show how scarcity narrows thinking and leads to short-term decisions.
To break free, I share the WIDE framework: widen your exposure, invest before you feel ready, price from value, and think beyond your current environment.
Through Sara Blakely’s story, I emphasize one truth: growth is not just about resources, but about refusing to let limitations define your future.
The scarcity mindset can be changed.

If you thought that building a real estate business requires significant capital, you are right! However, what you probably did not know is that it does not have to be your own capital.
Laolu Alabi, the founder and CEO of Damilare Baker, leveraged trust, competence and integrity to build one of the fastest growing real estate business in Nigeria. Architect turned entrepreneur, Laolu shares the story of how he pursued architecture at the university of Lagos, to avoid his dad questioning his grades at the polytechnic where he studied civil engineering. Laolu, in this interview, explains how he built a real estate business without significant upfront capital from him. He leveraged the trust capital he had built over the years to access financial capital and land for his first project. The rest they say is history!
In this interview, he also describes how his faith in God helped shape his entrepreneurial journey and the success that he has achieved till date. He shows no signs of stopping or slowing down. If you are an entrepreneur or aspiring to be one, and capital seems to be out of reach, this is an interview that you want to listen to. Laolu in his characteristic passionate and no holds barred style brings listeners into his world with the intention of helping at least one to make that leap.

Many entrepreneurs quietly fall into the trap of becoming their business. Where every win defines their worth, every setback feels personal. In this episode of Diary of an African Entrepreneur, I unpack the hidden identity crisis many founders face and introduce the B.I.N.G. Framework — practical principles designed to help you build successfully without losing yourself in the process.
Because when you separate who you are from what you build, you lead with clarity, resilience, and purpose.
You are not your revenue.
You are not your balance sheet.
You are the visionary behind it all — and that matters most.

What started as a book quietly became a movement.
One year after publishing Scaling for Success, I find myself reflecting on the ideas, lessons, and hard truths that gave birth to Diary of an African Entrepreneur.
In this deeply personal episode, I confront one of the most popular myths in African entrepreneurship that lack of funding is the biggest barrier to growth.
From years of working with SMEs across the continent, I’ve seen what truly holds businesses back: weak fundamentals, poor structure, misunderstood numbers, and untapped teams. I share why scaling is possible, even without external capital, and how founders can reposition their businesses to grow deliberately, sustainably, and with confidence.
This is not a celebration episode. It’s a clarity episode.
If you are building a business in Africa and feel stuck, stretched, or overwhelmed, this conversation may change how you see your company and your role as a founder.

In 2021, I sat across from Desmond Koney in his Accra office, just as we were selected to manage SEFAA (a fund investing in the agriculture value chain in sub–Saharan Africa). At the time, I was prospecting investments and building the pipeline. But his numbers didn’t seem to match the promise I saw. I decided to wait and see. By mid-2022, I returned, and was amazed by the company's performance since the start of the year - a performance they have sustained till date.
What I hadn’t realized, however, was the journey that led Desmond into agriculture. Leaving behind a successful career as a mechanical engineer, he stepped up to manage his late father’s farm - a place with deep sentimental value, having funded his family’s education. He failed! Despite these initial setbacks, Desmond applied engineering principles to reimagine the farm’s supply chain, treating it like a factory floor and solving complex agricultural challenges.
Today, Complete Farmer is customizing agricultural produce for international clients, developing protocols and leveraging data to ensure consistent, high-quality supply. This is innovation powered by resilience, first principles, and agility.
The story of Desmond Koney and Complete Farmer is a testament to dedication and the power of reimagining possibilities.

2025 was about survival for many African businesses.
2026 must be about structure.
In 2025, I had conversations with over 10 African entrepreneurs, founders, and CEOs across agriculture, logistics, finance, technology, and supply chains on Diary of an African Entrepreneur. One truth kept repeating: regardless of the industry, the same core principles matter.
This video is my reflection and synthesis of those lessons.
