Their scalable superchain requires multiple blockchains to participate and synchronize horizontally. Traditional designs have limitations as each new chain introduces new security risks and costs associated with validator sets. By utilizing Layer 2 to create a multi-chain ecosystem, developers can exchange resources as commodities and build cross-chain applications without worrying about systemic risks.
The Superchain by Optimism is a horizontally scalable solution that relies on the collaboration of several blockchains. The hardware needed to sync a blockchain increases with the level of computation it performs, requiring parallel operation for horizontal scaling. However, existing designs face challenges as each chain adopts a new security model, heightening systemic risk with the introduction of new chains. Creating new chains is costly due to the need for validator sets or producers. By integrating Layer 2 to create a multi-chain ecosystem, resources can be exchanged between chains as commodities, enabling developers to easily create cross-chain applications without concerns about systemic risks.

Data storage is sold in integer units of blobs, with each equivalent to 128 kB. Pricing is based on market supply and demand. Standard usage is 3 blobs/block (384 kB). Prices increase by 12.5% after 3 blobs, and decrease by 12.5% for usage ≤ 3 blobs.

This format offers faster throughput at a lower cost compared to traditional calldata. Call data expenses are significant for Layer 2 projects, with Rollup having spent a massive 15,000 ETH. Initially, Ethereum aimed for execution sharding, with each shard running various programs. However, due to limitations and risks, developers shifted focus to data sharding and found a solution for Rollup's growth hurdles with the introduction of "blob."
