Just looked at Nina. Four seconds. Five seconds. Not moving. Then he ran. He hit Nina at full speed and she went back against the wall and they both slid down to the floor. Nina couldn't speak. She just held him. Copper had his face buried in her neck and his whole body was shaking. The staff member filming stepped back and didn't say anything. Nina sat on that floor for a long time. Eventually she looked up and said: "He remembered. After fourteen months, he still remembered me." The intake coordinator later pulled Copper's file. The scrambled eggs note was still there. The ceiling fan note was still there. She said: "We read those notes to every volunteer who walked his kennel. Everyone knew those things about him. Nina made sure of that even when she had to leave him." Copper went home that afternoon. He slept the entire car ride with his head in Nina's lap. Sometimes the pause before the run is the most honest moment. It's the one second where a heart makes absolutely sure before it lets itself believe.
