I am not sure who the author of this excellent article is but it deserves being shared today.

Whilst our diaspora remittances massively help our economy the reality is that we remain the losers by having lost so much of talent. My prayer is that we can recreate #Zimbabwe into a Nation where all our people feel safe and want to live.

“Zimbabwe’s biggest export is not gold, platinum, or tobacco. It is intelligence. It is skill. It is the human mind and manpower. Every year, Zimbabwe sends more degrees, more professionals, and more high-value talent across its borders than it sends minerals out of its mines.

This is not an emotional claim; it’s a statistical reality backed by global institutions. With a literacy rate of about 93%, one of the highest in Africa according to UNESCO, the country produces educated people at a world-class rate. But instead of that knowledge powering local industries, it sustains foreign economies.

More than 4.3 million Zimbabweans now live in the diaspora, almost 30% of the entire population, according to the International Organization for Migration. And these are not just economic migrants.....they are nurses, doctors, teachers, engineers, accountants, IT specialists, and creatives.

Zimbabwe isn’t simply exporting people; it is exporting productivity, and innovation. Every departure is a transfer of value. Every skilled worker who leaves is a silent transaction where Zimbabwe receives nothing, and another nation receives everything.

The impact is measurable. In Zimbabwe received approximately US$2.162 billion in diaspora remittances in 2023 and an estimated US$2.58 billion in 2024, according to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe ..... more than several minerals produce individually.

But here’s the twist: those billions represent income earned elsewhere. They confirm that Zimbabwe’s human capital is so powerful that even outside its borders, it outperforms its own mineral wealth. Remittances have now become the country’s second-largest source of foreign currency, proving that the global market values Zimbabwean skill far more consistently than local economic structures do.

Yet, the loss is far greater than the money sent back. According to the Scientific & Industrial Research and Development Centre, Zimbabwe loses over USD $1 billion annually due to skills migration. Training a doctor takes more than a decade. Training an engineer takes thousands of dollars.

When these professionals leave, the country loses the investment, the expertise, and the future contributions.... all at once. Other nations benefit without spending a cent on their education. Zimbabwe pays the cost; the world enjoys the returns.

I'm tempted to believe that, the real mineral of Zimbabwe is not underground ...... it walks through airports and borders. The country is rich in education but poor in retaining it. While we focus on gold and lithium, the world quietly mines Zimbabwe’s greatest resource: its people.

Other nations don’t need to steal from Zimbabwe; they simply hire from it. Zimbabwean talent doesn’t cross borders as tourists; it crosses as solutions, as productivity, as economic engines for foreign countries.

The truth is simple: Zimbabwe exports more power in the form of knowledge than it does in any physical commodity.

We built a Time Machine... let me explain. A few weeks ago, we shared a photograph from the late 1800s showing young Shona speaking maidens in the 1890s wearing leather skirts with chevron patterns, beads, jewellery, and ostrich eggshell ornaments .

We decided to recreate this iconic look in 2025 in the same way it was back then.We imagined the tones and textures of the leather, cowhide, and accessories 200 years ago.
