Three years ago, if you told an investment banker that Nigeria's stock market would become the world's BEST performer, beating the US, Europe, and Asia, they would have laughed you out of the room.
Today, that banker is scrambling to explain why they missed it.
The NGX has delivered a 228% gain since end-2023. That's not a typo. That's not a bubble. That's what happens when a government actually reforms its economy.
From ₦30 trillion to ₦158.3 trillion. From 74,800 points to 245,209 points. From frontier market to global standout.
The question isn't whether it happened. It did. The question is: why?

A Tale of Two Ledgers: While Nigeria's federal debt hits a staggering ₦159.28 trillion, Anambra State offers a masterclass in fiscal discipline. Under Gov. Soludo, the state has maintained a zero-borrowing policy for over 3 years.
How? Anambra prioritized the future, allocating 77% of its budget to capital expenditure. By boosting Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) by 62%, they funded 540km of roads without borrowing a dime

There Are So Many People Around The President With A Rosy Picture Of What The Country Is — Onaiyekan
I was not surprised the president wasn’t looking very happy, even his colleagues present. We knew this is different from what our president keeps receiving from people, and that is one of the things that worry us. We have the obligation to help him to appreciate the reality of the situation in which we have found ourselves.
John Cardinal Onaiyekan
Archbishop Emeritus, Catholic Diocese of Abuja
Nigeria spent trillions fighting poverty.
But poverty appears to have won.
Approximately 133 million Nigerians were multidimensionally poor in 2022, while the World Bank estimated that around 139 million Nigerians were living below the national monetary poverty line in 2025.
At the same time, social-safety-net coverage reportedly fell from about 19% in 2018/19 to just 6% by 2023.
The problem is not only inadequate funding.
It is also the repeated allegations of missing funds, weak oversight, ghost beneficiaries, political interference and investigations that never seem to reach a conclusion.

Nigeria's FX market recorded a historic $4.375bn weekly turnover.
But record trading activity isn't the same as market strength.
True resilience depends on transparency, market depth, credible hedging instruments and sustainable FX supply, not headline numbers.

When does a business downturn stop being a rough patch and start becoming a pattern of collapse?
Nigeria's SME sector isn't facing isolated setbacks. It's losing 20% of its entire base in eighteen months, 8 million businesses, gone.
When entrepreneurs learn that survival past year one means beating 85% odds, and past year five means beating 95% odds, failure stops being personal. It becomes structural.
Our latest publication, The Silent Collapse: Nigeria's SME Crisis, examines how inflation, restricted credit, and unreliable energy are shaping not just business outcomes, but the country's economic future.

The Alliance for Economic Research and Ethics argues that Nigeria's declared fuel subsidy removal was an illusion, exposing a ₦17.5 trillion "shadow subsidy" hidden under terms like "energy security expense" that bypasses legislative appropriation, discourages the Dangote Refinery from displacing imports, and calls for a forensic audit, naira-denominated crude supply mandates, and exchange rate unification to end the fiscal deception.

The Alliance for Economic Research and Ethics argues that President Tinubu's July 2026 Executive Order on Virtual Assets Coordination is less about crypto and more about establishing tax, governance, and institutional oversight, creating a CBN-chaired Council and regulatory sandbox, while warning that unresolved gaps in taxation, data privacy, and legislative permanence could still undermine Nigeria's chance to become a regional digital-asset regulatory template.

The Alliance for Economic Research and Ethics warns that Nigeria's record $8 billion Q2 2026 private capital haul masks a dangerous "Middle Market Squeeze," with mid-sized deals shrinking from 54% to 37% of transactions and exit liquidity collapsing from 32 to just 7 deals, and proposes measures like a secondary market platform, a $500 million Fund-of-Funds, and pension fund reforms to prevent Nigeria from "building castles on sand."

"It is just like a child buying a Ferrari with borrowed money." 🚗📉
In my latest AIT interview, we broke down the
disconnect between rising government revenues and the everyday reality for millions of Nigerians.
Here are the key takeaways:
Government should not be in business - leave airlines and agriculture to the private sector!
We need an end to "vanity projects" funded by excessive public borrowing.
High government borrowing is crowding out real entrepreneurs from accessing affordable credit.
It’s time for a "FAAC Scorecard" to hold state governments accountable for how they spend allocations.
The job of the government is to create an enabling environment, not to compete with entrepreneurs. Awarding contracts is not an economic activity!
Swipe left to watch the highlights from the interview. Let me know in the comments—do you agree that government needs to step back and let the private sector drive the economy? 👇🏾

Nigeria is at a crossroads. And the numbers don’t lie. 🇳🇬
The Bank of Industry disbursed ₦644.9 billion in 2025.
1.68 million jobs supported.
14 sectors financed.
That is progress. Real, measurable progress. And we at Alliance commend it.
Nigeria cannot tax its way to prosperity. It must PRODUCE its way there. 🏭

N644.9 Billion Isn’t Enough: Alliance Says Nigeria’s Industry Needs More Than Applause
The Alliance for Economic Research and Ethics, led by Dele Oye, says BOI’s record N644.9 billion 2025 disbursement is a milestone but far from enough, urging single-digit lending, forex reforms, and cheaper borrowing costs to truly power Nigeria’s industrial transformation. (Source: Arise News)
