In SH2R, something completely different might have happened to Maria before meeting James, than in BfaW.
The smashed bottle of White Chrism, with the liquid spilled out, is evidence of a different story that happened off-screen.
In OG SH2, Maria brought the White Chrism bottle inside the mansion, to help Ernest. In SH2R's normal NG, the White Chrism is smashed and spilled out in the garden, and James can inspect it, implying it's important. Then in NG+ another bottle appears, and there's an uneasiness in Maria's voice as she recognizes it. Which implies she might have smashed the bottle herself in the remake instead of helping Ernest, for some reason.

Something might have went wrong when she returned to Baldwin Mansion with the White Chrism. Maria's comments on the Baldwin Mansion also don't seem right. BfaW ends just before James and Maria meet, but Maria talks about the mansion as if it's a distant bad memory that she doesn't fully remember. It's possible she's lying because she doesn't want to talk about what happened inside, which might have led her to smash the bottle (and therefore Ernest failed to bring his daughter Amy back).

James is on the verge of tears throughout the Burning Staircase scene, especially when Angela asks for the knife. She brings out a much more empathetic side of James that he doesn't show to any other character.
In the official SH2 novel, he thinks about this scene "Maybe the two of us carry a similar kind of darkness, allowing me to see and even be attacked by the same creature. That would also explain the phantom fire."

Recently I made a post about James possibly crying in the OG SH2 burning staircase scene. Because of that, I recieved many hate comments, mockery and harassment by a huge account and their fans. But James really cries for Angela, in the remake at least. And why wouldn't he cry?
Some people are just too eager to attack others and spread hate for internet points. If only they spent the same energy to work on themselves.
