He was born in a shepherd's cottage so poor and remote that they called him Laughing Tam, and he grew up to reshape the face of Britain with stone and iron.
Thomas Telford came into the world in 1757 in the lonely valley of Eskdale in Dumfriesshire. His father, a shepherd, died when Thomas was a baby, leaving the family in hard poverty. Young Tam was apprenticed to a stonemason, learning to cut and set stone with his own hands. He had almost no formal schooling. What he had instead was a fierce curiosity, a genius for how things were built, and a refusal to let his humble birth decide his future.
From those beginnings he rose to become the greatest civil engineer of his age, so celebrated that he was nicknamed the Colossus of Roads. He built more than a thousand miles of roads and over a thousand bridges across Scotland. He drove the Caledonian Canal through the Great Glen, linking the seas on either side of the Highlands. He raised the magnificent Menai Suspension Bridge in Wales, a wonder of the world in its day. Harbours, churches, aqueducts, whole networks of communication, all flowed from the mind of a poor Scottish shepherd's son.
Telford never married and had no children. His work was his family. When he died in 1834 he was buried in Westminster Abbey, the shepherd's boy laid to rest among kings and poets. A whole district of England, and a new town, would come to carry his name.
His life is the oldest and truest Scottish story there is. That where you start does not have to be where you finish. That poverty is not the same as failure. That a Scottish child with nothing but ability and grit can remake the world.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👑⚔️🧬🌉
