@NotSoLittleC The semantic-cognitive context is that the majority of our metaphors in English (especially in NA English) are from sports and war
These metaphors serve as a way of modeling texts to conceptualize and represent the reality; the lang itself shapes how we interpret and communicate
@StateFarm State Farm recently had to pay a $100 million settlement to the federal government because of its mishandling of flood insurance claims after Katrina.
@devonzuegel I think it’s a snowballing effect from the sunshine law affecting everyone’s preconceived notion of Florida because it’s only ever used for clickbait headlines instead of real transparency
@kchironis I think I can understand that perspective too.
Since you’re new to the series, look up the secret cow level. It will definitely lighten the mood
@kchironis They did the same to one of my domains years ago but the scam was less sophisticated then. They parked the domain and tried to charge a $400 reinstatement fee. I waited out the expiration and moved everything off of godaddy forever.
@MasaTanahashi It’s super rare for them to get big enough that they could swallow a person, but they wouldn’t be able to chew or digest you so you’d probably just get spit back out. They’re usually only about 15ft (4.5m) wide
@MasaTanahashi When they eat, they do a barrel-roll to scoop up all the plankton into those filter flaps. It’s super cool to see, but they’ll run right into you if you’re in between them and the food
