DEVGRU (SEAL Team 6) Red Squadron operators during the Captain Phillips rescue.

In April 2009, Captain Phillips was taken hostage by Somali pirates after the hijacking of the cargo ship Maersk Alabama.

After Phillips was forced into a lifeboat by the pirates, the situation developed into a tense standoff in the Indian Ocean. The US Navy tracked the lifeboat while negotiators attempted to secure Phillips' release peacefully.

As the situation deteriorated and intelligence indicated that Phillips was in immediate danger, DEVGRU operators were deployed to assist. Snipers positioned themselves aboard the destroyer USS Bainbridge and closely monitored the pirates movements.

On April 12, 2009, when the pirates were judged to pose an imminent threat to Phillips' life, the snipers executed a highly coordinated rescue operation. In a matter of seconds, three snipers fired multiple times, eliminating the three pirates holding Phillips captive and ensuring his safety.
