The future of Destiny 2 no longer includes regular paid expansions anymore.
Instead, the game will feature on smaller-scale content drops (similar to Into the Light) and aim to release these updates for free.

Payback, the internal "next Destiny" project, was set in the Destiny world, but pivot to 3rd person gameplay and explore large worlds in co-op experiences.
It was canceled 2 months ago to focus on Marathon, which is releasing in 2025

Former Bungie employees believe Bungie’s leaders overstated how well the studio’s finances were to Sony, and believe Sony overpaid for the company.

Please listen to Game Mess Mornings today. It's the first segment, and it will have all of the details you need. But the short version is that Payload, which is the "next Destiny," is being shelved indefinitely. They do not internally consider it Destiny 3, fwiw.
Some new leaks on future of Destiny after this week's layoffs at Bungie:
-- Destiny 3, reportedly codenamed Payback, has been canceled
-- No major expansions for Destiny 2, future content will revolve around 'lighter' and 'smaller' content drops throughout the year instead

Our Destiny 2: The Final Shape review is here (linked below):
"The Final Shape is a sentimental love letter to the social and community aspects of gaming... It’s not just the culmination of the expansions and seasons of the last 10 years, but the people we met along the way. It’s so rare for games to get to this moment and it’s practically unheard of to have it end so satisfyingly. Bungie did what seemed impossible with The Final Shape – they nailed it."

Episode: Echoes has a launch trailer. The first Episode launches tomorrow and it's about to get a little Vex-y in here. Don't worry though, Saint-14 is ready to remind them why they feared him.
One thing we don't know is how Raids or Dungeons will fit into all of this. There is a Dungeon Key associated with The Final Shape, but how they roll out with Episodes isn't clear. However, "Fikrul's Vampire Keep' is mentioned, which seems like a good bet for at least a dungeon.
The three Episodes of Destiny Year 10 have been outlined.
Episode: Echoes - a Vex-themed season that focuses on a transformed Nesus and a new threat that has the Vex acting up. "Nessus is different now"
Episode: Revenant - A Fallen focused season which will see the return of Fikrul. Vampire-slaying is the vibe they pushed, and it's likely to get a little spooky. There will also be potion-making.
Episode: Heresy - A Hive-themed episode that will focus a lot on the Hive Pantheon, and supposedly with the fallout of the Witness's defeat. It also will see us return to the Dreadnaught!
