XYRIEL AND KYLE TANDEM 💖
Aktor na si Kyle Echarri, nag-share sa Instagram ng ilang behind-the-scene photos mula sa kanilang film ni Xyriel Manabat na “18th Rose.”
“It’s finally out for the world to see!” saad nito sa kanyang post.
Sometimes when actors are just raw and authentic storytellers, there is no need for the loveteam formula to sell a Filipino film. Xyriel Manabat and Kyle Echarri play that so well in #18thRose_Netflix .
It is a nostalgic teen romance drama set in the early 2000s of scenic Romblon. At its heart, it’s a charming old story about two opposites who can’t stand each other. Rose is a feisty, big-hearted dreamer while Jordan/Jack is an arrogant Fil-Am with one foot already out of Romblon’s door.
Rose hatches a plan that could benefit them both, they strike a deal. her dream debut in exchange for his escape route. and with that chaos and kilig ensues.
There is something both wistful and dreamy about the film. It plays a lot on nostalgia, it is reminscent of the teen films of the late 90s and even the melodrama of that time. Parang may feeling ng old movies ala Trip at yung mga Nicholas Sparks na romance.
one can argue the plot is not new but there is a refreshing take on how the story unfolds. Director, Dolly Dulu shows some artistic restraint, not over the top melodrama. no big confrontations. no monologues. no wailing scenes. And her direction gives us a youthful and whimsical type of feeling in spite of the tragedy brewing in. The contrast really works well.
The actors also understood that assignment. They transform into these characters in this small, idyllic town.
Kyle Echarri seems to be getting a lot of criticism in some of his macho roles but here? He is truly in his element. Angst and vulnerability is something he portrays so well as an actor. One of his strongest scenes here is when he was practicing the cotillion dance while he held back tears. subdued but overflowing with emotion.
He has a certain softness that really works well in these types of roles. Do not write him out - may mga roles na super bagay sa kanya, especially when he shows tenderness.
Xyriel Manabat on the other hand, is the true star of the film. A star who has gravitas and mammoth talent. She is a charming heroine who really brings us in her story. Napaka natural niya as Rose. Relatable, funny, endearing, beautiful, and can sell the hell out of a romance. Kaya siya may chemistry with any pair-up she has because she has both screen charisma and undeniable skill as an actress. She disarms the audience as Rose. It is a given that she is so good but I think she needs more films as a central character.
Xyriel and Kyle’s chemistry is as youthful and whimsical as the film.
It is feel so good it hurts.
Panoorin ninyo, give Rose and Jack a chance.
Xyriel Manabat and Kyle Echarri have traced similar paths through their careers, both coming into prominence as child stars. A first-love romance like 18th Rose arrives as a natural progression in so many ways: a serious project for them to prove that they can act and that they’re all grown up, and a film that finally sees them in leading roles.
Best of all, it’s a vehicle that has allowed Xyriel and Kyle’s paths to cross, creating the kind of comedic, romantic, and dramatic chemistry that feels like lightning in a bottle… and like it’s only just the beginning. 🌹
