This screen was collected by the Qing imperial court, embodies a significant integration of Chinese and Japanese artistic traditions.
Its craftsmanship is distinguished by the combination of Japanese maki-e (蒔繪/まきえgold lacquer painting) and Chinese luodian螺钿art.
This composite technique emerged in Japan as a new development after Japanese artisans studied and adapted Chinese lacquer螺钿 technologies including gold tracing (miaojin描金) and luodian螺钿.
It not only preserves the core essence of traditional Chinese lacquer art but also incorporates distinctively Japanese aesthetic sensibilities in its detailed treatment and formal expression.
