Members of Congress can hire staff without a mandatory criminal background check.

Let that sink in.

If you work with kids, you need one. If you care for seniors, you need one. If you handle money, sensitive information, or hold a professional license, you need one. Teachers, nurses, bank tellers, bus drivers, even volunteers in the church nursery.

But the House? No mandatory requirement for its own staff, even though they handle sensitive information and serve the public every day.

Congress holds Americans to a standard it refuses to hold itself to. Not on my watch.

That’s why I introduced H.Res. 500 to require criminal background checks for House staff and disclosure of payments or agreements with foreign governments.

This is the least the House should be doing. Taxpayers deserve to know that the people on their payroll are acting in their best interests.

I’m fighting to restore trust and accountability in the People’s House, and that starts with getting these basic safeguards in place.
