I'm confident you know what went on with U.S. policy under Nixon and Kissinger when they ordered steps to "make Chile’s economy scream" preceding the Chilean coup d'état in 1973, because that's clearly the blueprint for #Venezuela.
Likewise, no one sounding alarms over "financing" the Green New Deal -- not a single person -- is proposing an alternative model to the U.S. Government's monetary system, which finances and settles its tabs itself by sending new money into the economy.
“Supporters of @AOC’s plans understand that spending will be absorbed without causing inflation if we ramp up production and installation of everything from solar panels and batteries to new plants and “smart” power grids.” -@rch371 https://t.co/wusQOn17er
Sure it’s nice that Krugman is defending AOC, but realize he’s talking as if we’re still on the gold standard. Taxation today serves many crucial functions, none of which is to raise revenue for the government. So when taxing the rich, all we should care about is taxing the rich.
In general, our elections are conducted in ways that create 'Epic disasters’. If we want real, open and transparent democracy our elections must be conducted that way- by citizens not machines. https://t.co/Ei4YQ7U91l
Wrong. A basic reading of history would help.
Fascists often call themselves socialists in order to co-opt the left’s rhetoric attacking the status quo. They supplant the left when the left fails to provide a meaningful alternative policy or agenda to the status quo.
The most dangerous of her ideas will be pushing PAYGO, which puts arbitrary constraints on the economy and reinforces the mindset of austerity. It is based on the myth that we have to “pay for” budget increases like a household & is the ultimate killer of any progressive agenda.
If you’re a Dem that’s (genuinely) still struggling to make the math work on #M4A, you’d be wise to budget out the most imp’t 51 mins of your career and watch @StephanieKelton on the “pay for” issue. My 69 yr old retired hygienist Mom gets it & u will too! https://t.co/mPlRRxpMee
.@StephanieKelton on @bbcworldservice debunking Trump's recent USA Today op-ed about "Democrats being radical socialists who want to model America’s economy after Venezuela." https://t.co/eYPOek6ouO
Tomorrow we speak to @NewEconomyNYC’s @RaulACarrillo & Tousif Ahsan about @PublicBankNYC coalition — a campaign for the creation of a public bank in NYC, as part of a broader vision for economic + racial justice.

We desperately need a popular reframing of economic activity that fits with reality. One centered not around endless growth but the goal of meeting the needs of all within the means of the planet. People are building that framework (@KateRaworth) but will we listen + act in time?
Bernie 2016 primary: The minimum wage is starvation pay. We must increase it to $15
Hillary 2016 primary: Let's raise it to $12 and see how it works out
Bernie: "I want to lead that effort, not just follow"
Hillary 2016 general: Let's raise it to $15
Hillary 2018: Thx, Bezos.
If your foremost solution for remedying society's economics ills is to "tax the rich," you're part of the problem, not the solution. Soaking the rich to fight inequality and "finding" the $ to finance public services are 2 things that are *not* interlinked https://t.co/U3N9il0Xmd
👀 @davidgraeber @AnnPettifor @ProfSteveKeen praise for Michael Hudson’s upcoming book “...and forgive them their debts” on the ancient history of economic civilizations - based on a 40 yr project in conjunction w/ Harvard Peabody on the archeological record & history of debt 👀
A decade later, Bernanke & Co still go on ignoring the main roots of the crisis: rising private debt levels and the decreasing rate of change of that debt.
I guess it’s understandable if you were cheerleading for every new debt instrument Wall St created leading up to the crash
Dear Dems supporting #PAYGO,
Please consider listening to our interview w/ @StephanieKelton on deficit and government spending myths, and why understanding how our monetary system works is crucial to making policies that help ordinary Americans a reality. https://t.co/t72wIafL6O
