There was a case in Mississippi of a guy named Curtis Flowers. He was tried 6 times for the same crime before eventually being exonerated. 4 of those trials were unanimous guilty verdicts, the 2 hung juries were 9-3 and 11-1 in favor of guilt.

That guilty verdict was eventually thrown out by SCOTUS in a decision written by Kavanaugh and joined by Alito on grounds of prosecutorial misconduct with regards to racist jury selection.

This is actually something cults do. Claim the leader did something miraculous that didn’t happen. Anyone who denies it is clearly not demonstrating group loyalty and can be purged.

Maybe it will though. Let's talk about The Strategic Absurdity Hypothesis.

Let's say you're a political radical or playing one on tv for cash. You can't just run for office and expect to win with such radical views. You're not looking to tweak the system, you're looking for REVOLUTION. You need ALLIES.

In such a case, it might be very efficient to embrace an easily disprovable lie as a core belief. It doesn't have to be about anything important - in fact, it might be better if it's about something that doesn't really matter. Your allies need to be able to (i) find each other and (ii) distinguish loyal members from outsiders.

It can't be any lie though. It should be COSTLY (people should think you're crazy for believing it or else anyone could adopt it). It should also be PERSISTANT (no matter what happens in reality, the lie should be flexible enough to endure). If you nail these traits, you can establish a highly effective coalitional signal.

I don't think these people really care about Kirk. He's dead and Robinson will be found guilty and there's nothing our nation's finest podcasters can do about it. But through this exercise the Dirtbag Right gets to establish their leadership structure and refine their communication channels and identify their soldiers. Not for this battle, but the next one.
