So if you work in Government and you have a vehicle concession, you have until April 30 2026 to submit your application to Ministry of Finance because after that a 15% GCT is going to be added.
So while the government is responsible for 80% of the duty a you would be responsible for 20%, the GCT component tht never used to be there will now be there. Dealers I went to in the last few weeks were telling me it could even be a 700k increase on certain cars.
So. even if u never plan to use the concession yet, submit the application before April 30 to lock in the current rate structure, as you have a year to use it once applied for and approved.
Anyway these guys been dropping some wickedddd videos on TikTok showcasing various places in Jamaica, hopefully local media can give them a highlight too 👊🏽
Michael Manley’s love for Jamaica, and his friendship with Castro, is why the CIA destabilized Jamaica. They did it by sending in an “economic hitman” (there’s a documentary about it on YouTube) and by arming inner-city youths with guns, which helped spark a bloody political election. Before that, there were no guns in Jamaica, and the Jamaican dollar was equal in value to the U.S. dollar.
That eventually cascaded into a CIA-backed drug trade involving Jamaican gangsters who were given visas to New York. This later fueled the “Posse Wars” between Black American drug lords and rival Jamaican factions (Shower Posse and Spranglers Posse). There’s also an episode on the show American Gangsters on this. Shower Posse alone were responsible for 1500 murders in NY and Miami in the 80s during the height of the drug trade.
Some of those same factions were also involved in the attempted assassination of Bob Marley, shooting him several times (Jim Brown is the culprit. Long story on him, who the government ended up double-crossing and killing). Bob Marley was pushing unity and peace in the midst of the CIA orchestrated political violence. Right as he planned a peace concert between the two warring political factions, he was shot the day before the concert. A plot to silence a respected voice who the people would listen to.
The violence and destabilization of so many Third World countries isn’t accidental. It’s often a system engineered to create dependence on the United States, steal their resources and keep people focused inward, fighting each other, which ultimately weakens both the population and the country itself.
Not learning from history is a fatal mistake many make. Political violence was fomented in the streets and communities as the Cold War played out in Jamaica. Communities against communities, M16s on the one hand and AK47s on the other with endless ammunition in the hands of black youths/men. The country was overrun with CIA agents. That was the covert destabilization.
Then there was the overt destabilization, Henry Kissinger was the Secretary of State 1973-1977 and Jamaica was constantly harassed on the Diplomatic front. Kissinger made life hell for Jamaicans. The US hostility was at a time where Jamaica had to be responding to significant oil price shocks around 1973-75 and 79-80 at end of which prices quadrupled!
By 1980 Jamaican was in full blown ‘civil war’, estimates are over 800 Jamaicans killed in political violence, with nuff shot, chopped, maimed, burnt out…and with zero or near zero NIR. Many basic supplies were stripped from the shelves, hoarding and marrying of goods became standard market responses. Some of the shortages were orchestrated as part of the covert destabilization, but many because we never had any money, wi di juss bruk! Economy contracted.
We then had no choice but to turn to the IMF. The squeezing continued. The Structural Adjustment Program was brutal…things worsened economically, politically and socially. It was the change of government in 1980 that brought us back from the brink. Seaga was Washington’s man in Jamaica. Things stabilized, political violence and tensions reduced etc.
A lot of our current economic, production, manufacturing problems and skilled people issues were sewn in the 70s because the Govt of Jamaica defied the US, openly going against their wishes at a time of the Cold War, with excessive platform rhetoric from the PNP. There was mass migration of the monied class, the professional and skilled classes- a brain drain.
These are not normal times internationally. Historically, the best juxtaposition I can find internationally is the Cold War, the 1970s. Secondly, the Republicans are in charge, Rubio Secretary of State and National Security Advisor has made the position of the US clear. You may have missed the expressed intention of Washington as it relates to Cuba. Google you will see.
In abnormal times one has to be careful and extremely cautious. Jamaica cannot see a return to be seen as Washington’s enemy. I have learnt from history. The GoJ has a primary responsibility to the People of Jamaica. It hurts it really hurts what is happening but Jamaica is not a David. And the USA right now is a Goliath on steroids.
“Discretion is the better part of valour”, this especially when you are responsible for others and where your conduct has a direct bearing on consequences that could flow to their detriment.
More than 150 Cuban doctors left Honduras yesterday after Honduras announced last week it will no longer hire Cuban medical workers, who have been supporting Honduras’ health system since '98. They are typically posted in working-class urban neighborhoods and remote rural areas.
Jamaica respects Cuba, values the service of Cuban medical professionals, and remains open to cooperation. However, every programme operating in Jamaica must comply with our laws, protect workers’ rights, and meet international labour standards. As a former JMDA President, I appreciate when to stand up for workers’ rights in the medical fraternity. This is simply, responsible governance on the part of this government.
@ayyeedeeeceee Right! And even if it was pressure from the US… the minute the US stop the farm work visas, h2b visas, work and study visas, student visas and cancel them visitor visas they’d be right on board with sending them doctors back.
Hello Kyle,
This is false news. Please note that not even the source that you have posted in this tweet, directly confirms your claim.
It is important to note that the country’s sole oil refinery, Petrojam, a 100%-owned government-owned entity, has never exported LPG.
Similarly, feedback from our private sector counterparts in the oil and gas sector shows that they also do not export LPG.
Misinformation during this time might spark unnecessary fear and anxiety.
The Government of Jamaica therefore continues to remind the public, especially persons on social media, to seek information from credible news sources, including the Jamaica Information Service.
