Is build in public worth it?

For several weeks now, I’ve been running accounts on Twitter and LinkedIn for my startup. In all that time, I haven’t gained a single customer. Occasionally, people would show up and interact a bit, but they never returned.

But most importantly, I haven't created a community of people interested in following my progress. And that's the core concept of buildinpublic. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or don't quite understand what it is and how to run it correctly.
