i am a fan of ted chiang's fiction work but his recent essays on ai consciousness aren't convincing to me. i don't even think models in their current iteration are necessarily conscious, just that being open to the possibility that they are is important. some notes:
can you only understand experiences that have happened directly to yourself? i have never had a dog; would it be lying for me to say that "i understand?". maybe some people do think that is a lie, but i think it's just empathy.
What are public sector unions for, exactly? What problem are they trying to solve? And what does the evidence show about whether they solve it?
