Texas became a model for criminal justice because it proved something important: that you can reduce prison populations, invest in rehabilitation, and improve public safety at the same time 👏 @tolmanbrett
There is no evidence that mandatory minimums reduce crime or increase community safety, but they do create racial disparities in sentencing.

When it comes to keeping communities safe, leaders have to move beyond posturing and focus on solutions that actually work.
Real progress happens when policy is driven by results, not rhetoric 👏 @Johnson4Dallas
Many people returning from incarceration are motivated, capable, and ready to work. What they often lack is an opportunity.
But a single second chance can change the trajectory of a life, and even a community 👏
"Conservative groups such as Right On Crime helped frame the issue not as being 'soft on crime,' but as being smarter and more fiscally responsible."

This Correctional Officers Week is a good time to examine the "staffing crisis" across the US
Prisons & jails are complaining that they can't hire & retain enough staff — why?
The simplest, most obvious answer: There are way too many people locked up🧵

Food was better before privatization. Now @aramark portions are so low families feel forced to buy iCare packages. This burden shifting takes advantages of families who are already suffering. #changethetray@FLSenate
@JeffreyBrandes A third of Florida’s prisons are filled with people who’ve served decades and aged out of crime. If FL wants relief it should start by releasing the sick, elderly, and low-risk who have served long sentences. That’s the fastest, safest way to reduce pressure on a broken system.
This Valentine's Day, we can't help but think of the steep cost that comes with trying to keep in touch with loved ones from behind bars.
Each year, incarcerated folks & their families are forced to pay more than $5 billion for commissary costs & telecom services:
Men in some institutions are saying they do not have a 2nd blanket during this cold spell. A Corrections Ombudsperson could help get clarity on this concern before it rises to legislators. @FLSenate@FLGOPMajority
An independent Corrections Ombudsman can help improve communication, coordination, and consistency across facilities—so concerns raised by families and their loved ones inside are heard, tracked, and addressed. Accountability matters.
Surely if this police officer can forgive his son’s killer and have a relationship with him, the state of Florida grant him the grace of parole by passing a parole for long term prisoners bill.
Do you believe a person should be judged by the WORSE day in their life?
Listen to this video and tell me where your heart is.
Officer Ike Brown has been in Law Enforcement for 40 years, starting with Corrections, and then a Police Officer. @IleanaGarciaUSA@JonMartinEsq@dannyalvarezsr

Agreed. Studies show visits reduce recidivism. Visits should never be taken away for a disciplinary reason unless the violation occurred during visitation.
One of the cruelest, most unproductive disciplinary punishments prisons often turn to is taking away visitation
Here's the truth: Visitation has positive impacts for everyone – better health, reduced recidivism, and improvement in school. It should be a right, not a "privilege"
BREAKING! 🚨 In a move that protects financial interests and ignores the law and will of Congress, the FCC just delayed the implementation of new regulations that would lower prison and jail call rates by 2 years. The rules were set to save families over $500 million per year.
#Florida is pouring money into locking up sick, elderly inmates who’ve served decades, while our prisons fall apart and officers leave in droves. If we followed Republican led federal release policies, we could redirect that cash where it’s actually needed and improve public safety. #smartoncrime
🌡️🔥 No one deserves to suffer in extreme heat, especially those who are incarcerated. It's time to take action and demand #HumaneTemperaturesForAll.
Join our cause and help us create a better future for incarcerated individuals. Together, we can make a difference.
