You would not want to watch a soccer game without offside. It’d be miserable to watch — hoofing the ball back and forth with both forwards and defenders camped in front of goal.

The offside rule was introduced to make the game more exciting and higher scoring, which it did.

@JoePatrick Somehow I’d love to tie in time wasting and embellishing and injuries and stoppage in general to this conversation. Imagine how much of the game you’d really have to break down to argue against Skip and Mike on this point.
