A legally blind Navy veteran was arrested after a deputy mistook his cane for a gun.

On October 31, 2022, James Hodges, then 61, was walking home in Lake City, Florida, after jury duty was canceled.

Deputy Jayme Gohde stopped him, believing the folded mobility cane in his back pocket was a handgun. Hodges immediately showed her it was a cane.

When he refused to provide identification and demanded the officers’ names and badge numbers, Sgt. Randy Harrison ordered him arrested for resisting without violence. Hodges spent time in jail before the charge was dropped.

Sheriff Mark Hunter called the deputies’ conduct “unacceptable” and publicly apologized.

Gohde received a two-day suspension without pay.

Harrison was demoted, given a seven-day suspension without pay, and barred from raises or promotions for two years. Both were ordered to complete remedial civil-rights training.

Hodges later filed a civil rights lawsuit that was settled out of court. A Navy veteran doing nothing wrong ended up in handcuffs over a white cane.

Alright, I owe everyone an update. So much for innocent until proven guilty around here. 😅

Apparently I've been playing on my PS5 Pro for years without realizing my original PS5 still had Console Sharing & Offline Play enabled and was set as my primary console. So yes—many of you were right. That setting does allow you to play your digital games offline.

But here's what I discovered while trying to fix everything... during a PSN outage.

1⃣ My original PS5 had to be deactivated before I could enable Console Sharing & Offline Play on the Pro.
2⃣ I couldn't make that change while PSN was having issues because the console couldn't validate it.
3⃣ Until all of that was sorted out, my digital games (Legend of Dragoon, Wild Arms, Echoes of Aincrad, etc.) were indeed asking PSN to verify my licenses before launching.
4⃣ Oh, and by the way, My PS5 Pro disc drive required a one-time online registration before I could even use physical discs.

So no—I wasn't making it up or parroting other sentiments for clicks. I was referring to exactly what I experienced. Ironically, figuring out the solution made me more concerned about an all-digital future, not less.

Call me old-fashioned, but I remember when owning two PS2s meant plugging them into different TVs, inserting a disc, and... playing. No online registration. No account activation. No license validation. No wondering whether a server outage would stop you from changing the settings you need to play the games you already bought.

That's not a step forward. That's more friction between you and the games you paid for. Games you don't own and paid full price for, by the way.

And, sadly, this isn't just a Sony problem. This crap is happening across the industry. Why are we okay with this?
