โI love the Lord Jesus Christ. May we strive to see Christ at the center of our lives, of our faith, and of our service. That is where true meaning lies. Until that hour, when Christโs consummate gift is evident to us all, may we live by faith, hold fast to hope, and show compassion one of another.โ โJeffrey R. Holland (1940โ2025)
Itโs hard to put into words how proud I am of Spence. As an older brother, I canโt help but get emotional when I think about everything my little brother has accomplished. Thereโs one story that always plays in my head when I think about his success.
I was fortunate enough to receive my first offer from BYU when I was in 8th grade. It was a huge accomplishment for my family and I, and it brought a lot of attention. Fast forward a few years, Iโm a junior in high school, Spence is a freshman. My recruiting is picking up and Iโm getting more offers, while Spence still hadnโt gotten his first yet.
I could tell it bothered him, even though he never showed it. If you know Spence, you know he always has a smile on his face and chooses positivity, even when something is weighing on him.
One night around 1 am, weโre laying in our room and I hear him whisper, โHey Log, are you up?โ I pretend to be asleepโฆ then he asks again. And again. And again. If you know Spence, you know he wasnโt going to stop till I was actually up ๐คฃ
I finally roll over annoyed and said, โYes, Iโm up now. What the hell do you want?โ
He goes, โCan I ask you a question, bro?โ
Then he asks, โLogโฆ be honest with me. Do you think Iโm ever gonna be good enough to get an offer?โ
At first Iโm thinking, you really woke me up to ask me that? Youโre only a freshman, of course you can. But I could tell it had been on his mind for a while, so I told him, โOf course you are. Thereโs no secret. Just work hard.โ
I also told him about a conversation I had with my head coach before he had even met Spence. I said, โCoach Stokes asked if my little brother was any good. I told him you were good, and that you were going to be way better than me. So donโt make me look like an idiot.โ
Now here we are just a few years later, and it brings me so much joy knowing my younger brother didnโt make me look like an idiot ๐คฃ๐คฃ
