The notorious super El Niño of 1877-78 contributed to a global famine that wiped out 3 to 4 percent of the global population.
It was arguably the worst environmental disaster to ever befall humanity.
Are we better prepared now? The evidence says yes 🧵
Breaking News!
Code UFB!!!
April data for "Total Column Precipitable Water" just came in, and once again a new record was set for the 36-month running average over the Northern Hemisphere, Mid-Latitudes, where over 50% of all humans live.
Can you spot the trend?
The new Copernicus state-of-climate report came out this week!
It shows that Europe is the continent warming strongest. And it also shows the northern Atlantic 'cold blob', which is already affecting our weather. See e.g. this seminal study: https://t.co/dqriOtHZEw
Global sea surface temperatures just hit a new all-time high for April 14.
A ~5,000-mile marine heatwave now stretches from Micronesia to California, highlighting the sheer scale of record-warm water across the Pacific.
Earth’s oceans are exceptionally warm right now.
AMOC collapse should be top of the global agenda. Instead most ppl haven't heard of it and easily digestible explainers like this are rare. Listen, there is a very much non-negligible risk that you and/or your children will die from it, so it's worth 1m26s of your time!
👇👇👇
🚨 New research suggests the AMOC is more likely to collapse than previously thought.
Scientists call the finding “very concerning”, warning that a collapse could have catastrophic consequences for Europe, Africa and the Americas.

AMOC is weakening. New Potsdam Institute study: once it collapses, it stays collapsed. The point of no return was 350ppm CO₂. We crossed that in 1988. We're at 430 today. Without the Gulf Stream: US East Coast winters get extreme. Europe loses 7°C. Southern Ocean releases 83 gigatonnes of CO₂. The fossil fuel industry knew about AMOC in the 1980s. Same decade we crossed 350. The EPA just stopped regulating the emissions driving it.

This is cartoonish.
A +21°F (+11.7°C) national anomaly over the 1991–2020 baseline is the kind of number you’d expect from a broken model run… not reality.
Yet here we are.
March 20th and the entire country looks like late May (or worse). Records falling coast to coast, warmth saturating everyregion.
But sure—tell me more about how this is “natural variability.” 🤣
44°C in Arizona… in March.
Let that sink in.
Records aren’t just breaking — they’re collapsing.
This isn’t natural variability.
This is human-driven warming, and it’s speeding up. End war - come together and build climate mitigation urgently.
I think this isn't getting enough attention.
In a world packed with overwhelming bad news, I feel like this still ultimately will trump it all. Which is very bad.
NASA: ACCELERATING SEA LEVEL RISE -RATE DOUBLED PAST 30 YEARS
NASA satellite measurement (satellite altimetry) shows accelerating sea level rise rate - doubled over past 30 years.
Demonstrates the awesome surface heating of our planet.
