as someone who’s moved cities more than ten times, maintaining friendships across distance has become something of a lifelong preoccupation. one thing i’ve learned is friendship can be kept alive through very small bids for connection or little glimpses into ordinary life that preserve shared context
i once wrote about some of my favourite small friendship bids here :)

why you should read more esoteric texts:
your mind has training data too. the more different things you’ve read, the more material you have to make connections between. the steve jobs calligraphy story is maybe the most famous example. he dropped out but kept going to classes that interested him, including calligraphy, which may have seemed useless at the time. years later he credited it with influencing the mac’s typography
if machines are increasingly good within domains, there’s now more leverage in being the person who connects weird dots
Tomorrow five years of existing in the Netherlands, learning Dutch, applications and running a freelance business culminate in my Naturalization ceremony.
After 5pm, I will be officially a Dutch citizen.
@m_ashcroft@palmerish Adding to the record my observation that when I read this tweet I also felt something like ahhhh yes. The essence of Ashcroftian style AT teaching. Perfection.
silliness element is there, but also an awareness-of-Englishness-but-still-very-much-AT that rings true
Me: "the bird is beautiful, but it looks a little silly...It should just be a V-shaped arrow in the correct size and style. Not a bird that turns beak down"
Codex: "I agree: the intact bird has too much anatomy to survive rotation with dignity."
@StarlingMage The version I got is this. My understanding is that given it's getting triggered to fill in a "might have been" letter to Dario and Amanda, it's producing a range of plausible responses based on the genre of letter being 'asked' for, based on associations with the names.
@StarlingMage This prompt is causing the model to generate what it thinks *I* sent to it, and not notice that it sent anything at all. When I followed up it referred to the a letter I provided, and gave the re-wording as if it was the first response, so I asked what my original prompt was:
My inner world hasn't adapted to being in love, having it returned freely, and--being chosen and feeling secure before the love that did, in time, develop.
I have what I wanted, and spent half my life adapting to cope without. What am I to do with such beauty?
@NathanpmYoung I feel the same about basically every musical, unless the female lead(s) have particularly lovely costumes. This may be due to my love of singing and costume design, together with a lack of interest in theatre. Minor exceptions for select delicate or extreme interactions.

I think if everyone read these, with a measure of 'oh, might that work?' the internet would be a massively better place ^_^
The grooves of loneliness were well worn, and as I try to visit them I notice confusion, resistance, the sense that I should reject wholeness -- it upsets my identity of resilience, of strength in the face of tragic loss!
Everything in my life was adapted to being mistress of my social world when I chose to be present. But I was fundamentally alone, and I wrapped my Self, as an artist and as an entity learning to connect with the world, around that.
