This going to to be an unpopular opinion.

Most people think the college basketball and football became so popular because of the athletes.

Wrong. Most of the fan base comes from a bond through the school student body, alumni, and local community.

NCAA through television expanded that brand nationally.

But you coukd replace all D1 athletes with junior college players and prominent schools would still be selling out arenas

If the athletes were the key market, then all they needed to do was go to the G league of minor league basketball and see how many fans would show.
