The word “odyssey” comes directly from the title of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey, known in Greek as Ὀδύσσεια (Odýsseia), meaning “the story of Odysseus.” The title itself comes from the name of the hero, Odysseus (Ὀδυσσεύς), whose legendary journey home after the Trojan War forms the heart of the poem.

By the late 16th century, English writers began using “odyssey” as a common noun rather than only as the name of Homer’s epic. Because Odysseus’s voyage was a long, difficult journey filled with danger, discovery, and unexpected challenges, the word evolved to describe any extended adventure or personal journey.

Today, “odyssey” remains one of the rare book titles that has become part of everyday language. Other examples include “quixotic” from Don Quixote, “utopia” from Thomas More’s Utopia, and “catch-22” from Joseph Heller’s novel.

The Iliad and Odyssey were two of eight ancient Greek epics. The other six are lost, with only fragments remaining.

The eight poems of the Epic Cycle told the complete story of the Trojan War in chronological order:

The Cypria covered the events leading up to the war and its first nine years. The Iliad focused on a few weeks during the final year, followed by The Aethiopis, which described Achilles’ final battles. The Little Iliad told of the planning and creation of the Trojan Horse, while The Sack of Troy covered Troy’s destruction. The Returns followed the Greek heroes’ journeys home, and The Odyssey chronicled Odysseus’ return to Ithaca. The Telegony continued his story after the events of The Odyssey.

Only The Iliad and The Odyssey survive in their entirety.
