Apprenticeships have fundamentally changed, they still include the skills you highlight, at intermediate level as well as advanced, higher, and degree.
So it's possible to go to University and work at the same time, this guarantees a relevant qualification

Rather than be the millionth person out there with some useless degree with little or no market value, youngsters should consider apprenticeship in trades. Being a qualified electrician, plumber, carpenter, plasterer, steel-fixer, welder, mechanic, chef, technician etc. is something you have a high chance of being able to earn money from straight out the gate. You can always move up the value chain from there and you will always have something to fall back on if need be. Also, none of those trades are going to be replaced by AI for a very long time, if ever.
