We hired a backend guy recently who didn’t know half the buzzwords.
No Saga, no CQRS, shaky on K8s. On paper, easy reject.
Then we gave him a real prod-ish bug:
sporadic 500s, p95 spikes, only on one endpoint.
He did 3 things:
1. Asked for repro + timeline. “When did it start? What changed? Any new feature release?”
2. Cut the problem space. Logs first, then metrics, then a single failing request ID.
3. Formed a hypothesis, tested it, wrote down what each result would mean.
Found it in 25 mins:
connection pool exhausted from one code path leaking retries + no timeout.
I’ll take that over memorized concepts anyday.
This is what people don't get right, companies hire for fundamentals + debugging. You can teach patterns. You can’t teach calm thinking under failure.
If you are a software engineer "experiencing some degree of mental health crisis", now hear this, because I've been coding for 50 years since the days of punched cards and I have a salutary kick in your ass to deliver.
Get over yourself. Every previous "programming is obsolete" panic has been a bust, and this one's going to be too.
The fundamental problem of mismatch between the intentions in human minds and the specifications that a computer can interpret hasn't gone away just because now you can do a lot of your programming in natural language to an LLM.
Systems are still complicated. This shit is still difficult. The need for people who specialize in bridging that gap isn't going to go away.
As usual, the answer is: upskill yourself and adapt. If a crusty old fart like me can do it, you can too.
Kubernetes is not the solution to every problem.
Most of you are running 3 containers and paying for the operational complexity of Netflix.
Sometimes a VM and systemd is the right answer.

Managed to get WiFi working on Linux with an unsupported WiFi card! (MT7902)
By using QEMU/KVM with PCIe passthrough and Internet sharing on the Windows VM to the tap0 interface.
You can get the WiFI connection to work on the host through this hacky method!
