Her name is Therese Garcia.

She was sitting on her porch in Crestline, California, like she does every day, when a young man walked by and started talking to her.

He told her a story.

All his stuff had been stolen while he was camping. He had a job interview lined up at a hardware store nearby. He just needed a place to sleep.

She believed him.

She let him into her home, gave him a bed and she cooked him dinner.

EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT.

Her daughter said Therese thought he was just a "sweet kid" who was down on his luck.

His name is Erik Eduardo Navarro. He's 26 years old.

By day six, he had stopped doing anything he agreed to do and had started making DEMANDS. Her daughter said he was slowly taking over the house.

So this 71-year-old woman finally told him it was time to go.

That night, she fell asleep on her own couch.

And according to her family, he picked up a metal baseball bat and started swinging.

Her family says he beat her... FOR HOURS.

He would stop when she lost consciousness and when she started to wake up…

HE WOULD BEAT HER AGAIN.
Over and over and over.

In her daughter's own words: "He just kept beating her until he finally thought she was de*d."

Then he took her phone, her credit cards, her keys, and her e-bike, and he walked out into the dark.

Deputies only found her because NEIGHBORS got worried and called for a welfare check at 6AM.

Her family says if those neighbors hadn't called, she would have bled to de*th on her own floor.

When she got to the hospital, doctors found traumatic brain injury, bleeding on the brain, broken bones in her arm, her hand, and her face.

Her eye was swollen so badly she couldn't see.

She had deep lacerations that took extensive stitches.

She vomited blood for DAYS.

She may still need facial surgery and sadly, she has NO health insurance.

The woman who fed a stranger is now paying for her own beating.

He is STILL OUT THERE, deputies have been looking for him since August 25th.

He has not been caught.

...and he has ALREADY THREATENED ANOTHER WOMAN in that same town.

This is Bonnie Pierce, a 38-year-old mother of three from St. Paul, Minnesota. Her house caught fire. She and two of her children escaped, then realized her toddler was still inside.
Bonnie went back in, found the child, but could not get out. She shielded the child with her body. She died from her burns. The child survived.
A GoFundMe for her family raised about $42,000.
By comparison, more than $1,000,000 was raised on GoFundMe for Lindsay Clancy, who was charged with killing her children.
It is a sad reflection of the society we have become.
