Take a good look at this miraculous photo, it was taken in 1932, during one of the first Masses of a young German priest.

The Boxer Rebellion of 1900 brought sudden and brutal danger to China's Catholic villages. As anti-foreign and anti-Christian forces swept the region, Zhujiahe became a refuge for thousands of terrified believers fleeing violence. Mary's husband organized the village's defenses, but he died during the siege. When thousands of attackers, reinforced by imperial troops, finally broke through on July 20, the surviving Christians crowded into the church. There, amid gunfire and chaos, Mary rose to a moment of extraordinary courage. As the Jesuit priest Léon Ignace Mangin distributed communion and offered absolution, she stepped forward and stood before him with arms outstretched, shielding his body with her own. A bullet struck her, and she fell at the altar. The church was soon set ablaze, claiming the lives of most inside, including the priests.

Mary Zhu Wu's martyrdom did not occur in isolation but as the culmination of a lifetime of faithful witness. Beatified by Pope Pius XII in 1955, she was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 2000, among a large group of Chinese martyrs. Her feast day is observed on July 20. In the story of Chinese Christianity, she stands as a quiet yet radiant example of how ordinary believers, rooted in charity and prayer, can meet even the gravest threats with self-giving love.
