My dadi did a sankalp of 1008 Argala and keelakam along with REAL fasting for nine days during navratri of the year when my mother was pregnant. My baba took leave from his work for 9 days and did entire saptasati and chandipath under his guru baba during same time.

My parents from both sides are the eldest so the child they were expecting was the first of a new generation. Every evening after aarti, my grandparents would spread open a red gamcha in front of maai and pester her to bless them with a son.

Then I was born.

This is a mandatory anecdote which gets passed around every Navratri in family. My dadi would later also used to force me to sit with her for hours to sort the samagri and chowki, where I was made to mug up hanuman chalisa and siddh kunjika stotram, my first modules of religious education.

And then on every navratri during puja I get randomly teared-up remembering dadi and wonder why.

Sometimes we don’t even acknowledge the kind of blessings and protection we are under while we keep cribbing about the things that didn’t go as planned. We have also acquired this culture of ‘nazar’ while cohabiting a low-trust society. Don’t talk about your Ws and good things publicly, for they attract bad eyes.

I don’t think so. I know I’m protected and spoilt. Manifesting for everyone around me to be successful, prosperous and blessed under the ever-caring eyes of the Maai.

I never really liked this nazar culture of being discreet about good things. Before prosperity, let us all hope for a healthy social circle around us by inculcating a mindset of abundance with the help of matarani.

Matarani ka sher is thus very glad and emotional today, for everything.

Durga Saptashati 11.6 says "स्त्रियः समस्ताः सकला जगत्सु": all women in the world are forms of Devi.
True.
But the same shloka continues: "त्वयैकया पूरितमम्बयैतत्": it is You alone, the One Mother, who pervades all of this.

This is the key to understanding worship in Sanatan Dharma.

Every Devi Devta we worship is an ideal. Shiva and Shakti are the ideal. Rama is the ideal human being. Hanuman is the ideal bhakta. We cannot worship every woman in the world, every being, every tree, every serpent. So we worship the ideal, and through it we communicate with one particular manifestation of God.

Prashna Marga shows this very subtly. Among the causes of sarpa dosha, it lists digging earth, levelling the habitat of serpents, felling trees near their dwelling and breaking their anthills. Think about what that means. Most of the land we build our homes on was once home to serpents. We dig, destroy their dwelling and raise our own house over it. Many of our ancestors did the same. This is where traditional sarpa dosha comes from.

Now, can anyone find and appease every serpent whose home was destroyed? Impossible. So the remedy is propitiation of the Sarpa Devata. The ideal is worshipped, and the dosha is pacified.

Stri dosha works the same way. No one can satisfy every woman in the world. So the Jagat Stri, the ideal Stri, has to be worshipped and propitiated. That is Devi.

Whether we pray to Naga, a tree, Devi or Shiva, we are communicating with one specific manifestation of Para-brahma.
This is the reason behind worship, and behind every astrological remedy. This is the crux.

The young priest tells her “Maa come fast and eat. Today is Friday and I need to go to my Vedam class”

She comes and she eats.

He asks her if it’s tasty and she says it’s good.

When she feels a little coughy, he says looks like your husband is thinking of you.

And he also removes nazar with the bowl.

Later the elder priest returns and sees the bowl empty and asks where is the prasaadam?

He says “Maa ate it.”

The priest thrashes him and says “don’t lie. You are and are telling vigraham ate. Where will a stone eat?”

The young priest orders her to tell that she ate.

He says “If you don’t say, I will throw away my jandhya and stop studying vedam.”

At which point Maa comes and asks “You boy! You fed me very tasty prasaadam but did not wash my hands.”
