Ellis Island immigrants

They came seeking work in an industrial economy with almost no federal welfare safety net.
Over generations their children and grandchildren adopted English, intermarried, and integrated into American life.

Its not the same people coming now. In recent years illegal crossings or visa overstays have produced a large unauthorized population. English proficiency is not common in migrant communities. Residential patterns show a lack of national identity, especially where large low-skilled inflows exist. Ethnic enclaves are on the rise.
The earlier system selected for people who could quickly support themselves under open but inspected entry does not fit today's patterns.
