He stayed quiet.

I walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

Employee: “But you knew.”

Silence.

Employee: “You knew I wanted that position.”

Employee: “You knew I was qualified.”

Employee: “You knew I had been doing most of that job already.”

He looked down.

Manager: “I’m sorry.”

I nodded.

Employee: “I believe you.”

He looked up.

Employee: “But apologies are strange things.”

Manager: “What do you mean?”

I opened the door.

Employee: “They usually arrive right after the person finally realizes you were worth more than they were willing to pay.”

Friday was my last day.

On Monday, I started my new job.

The company didn’t lose an employee.

They lost the person they kept expecting to accept being undervalued.
