I think you are supposed to have a period in your life when you question religion, question the purpose of God, question His existence, before eventually coming to believe in God, even if you never completely understand what God means.

I think every believer should be a Saul in some sense before becoming a Paul. The former teaches you to understand, from the outside, what you are questioning, what you are fighting even, and why you are doing so; the latter teaches you to understand why you have bent the knee and the weight of the responsibility that comes with it.

There should be a Road to Damascus moment, of course. I would argue that if you are a believer and cannot pinpoint the thing that made you believe in the existence of God, or at least gave you some conviction that He exists, then your faith, no matter how loudly you proclaim it, is very much suspect.
