In about a month since it was launched, over 1 crore households have already registered themselves for the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

Registrations have been pouring in from all parts of the nation. Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh have seen over 5 lakh registrations.

Happy that PM @narendramodi mentioned the contribution of the people of my ancestral village, Cuncolim in their relentless fight against the Portuguese regime.

People of Cuncolim led an armed uprising against the Portuguese soldiers and missionaries who had come to destroy the Hindu temples of the village in 1583.

For almost a decade before that, people of Cuncolim and 4 other villages nearby - Ambelim, Assolna, Veroda and Velim – had waged a protest against the Portuguese colonialists by not paying taxes, centuries before Gandhi came up with the non-cooperation movement.

On July 25, 1583, five Jesuit missionaries accompanied 14 native converts and Portuguese soldiers went to Cuncolim with the objective of destroying the temple of Goddess Shantadurga, the presiding deity of the village.

Angry villagers killed the invaders in a spontaneous uprising to defend their #dharma. The Portuguese responded in a treacherous manner by inviting 16 village chieftains to the Assolna fort for peace talks, asking them to come unarmed.

After the chieftains arrived, the fort's gates were shut and the unarmed chieftains were massacred in cold blood. It is believed that only one escaped by jumping into the river.

The Chieftains memorial in Cuncolim is a testimony to the valour of the people of Cuncolim.
