Just got home from seeing Supergirl; here's my honest review:
First and foremost, Milly Alcock absolutely kills it as Kara; her version of Supergirl is one that the general audience can look up to and relate to. She's vastly different from Superman, and I think that's a good change from the CW version. Also, her chemistry with Eve Ridley (Ruthye) is amazing.
As we all know by now, Lobo does not appear in the Woman of Tomorrow book, but is played by Jason Momoa in this movie, and he actually nailed the role, not just appearance-wise, but also character-wise. But I do dare to say that he doesn't play a big role in the film's plot; even if he weren't there, the story would've unfolded practically the same.
We already knew that this movie was not going to be a 1:1 translation into live-action from the WoT book (for starters, Lobo's here), and of course, changes were made; most of them didn't affect the overall plot and worked fine with its execution. On the other hand, one of the book's pivotal plot points (which I can't dive into without giving spoilers) was altered in a way that cut the film short on what could've otherwise been very important scenes, even more when you take into consideration Milly and Eve's astonishing performances, but even then, a new subplot is added and I believe it adds crucial weight to the social commentary that the film by itself carries.
We also need to talk about the villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, who received the most modifications compared to his comic book counterpart, not only visually, but also when it comes to his motives and character development. Overall, I think Matthias did a good job with what he was given and managed to give a scary villain at times.
To sum it up, I'd like to say that both Craig Gillespie and Ana Nogueira did a great job bringing this project to life and undoubtedly projecting Kara into a major role in the DCU's future. As a piece of personal advice, if you haven't read Woman of Tomorrow yet, I'd recommend reading it after watching the movie; that will make your experience more enjoyable than it will already be.
Finally, my mom loved the soundtrack, so... kudos to whoever did that!
I give Supergirl (2026) 9/10 :)
