The Centre for Law, Policy and Innovation Initiative is calling for applications to the KAS Youth4Policy Innovation Policy Fellowship 2026, delivered in partnership with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Uganda & South Sudan.

This fellowship represents a valuable opportunity for early-career professionals in Uganda with an interest in science, technology, innovation, and AI policy to gain hands-on experience in policy research, analysis, and formulation. Over four weeks, selected fellows will work in teams to develop policy briefs on real challenges identified by government partners, culminating in formal presentations and submissions to relevant institutions.

Whenever someone tells me, “Things only changed recently,” I usually assume they only started following Ugandan politics around 2021.

I still remember the 2016 presidential election debate, where Dr. Kizza Besigye said that some of the people who had come with him had gone missing. Back then, social media wasn’t what it is today. If someone was arrested or disappeared, many Ugandans would never even hear about it. Today, almost everyone has a smartphone and news spreads within minutes.

You can’t compare the generation of Dr. Kizza Besigye, Ingrid Turinawe, Sam Mugumya, Erias Lukwago, Doreen Nyanjura, Salaamu Musumba, Augustine Ruzindana, Jack Sabiiti, Sam Kalega Njuba, and Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu with us Gen Z, who debate politics from the comfort of X Spaces.

Among this generation, who can honestly withstand what some of those men and women went through?

Many of today’s loudest voices can’t. Some try to act tough but the moment a small opportunity comes their way, they change overnight. Give them UGX 200,000 and suddenly they start speaking in tongues. 😂😂😂

I remember people who sacrificed their businesses, careers and personal comfort because of their political beliefs.

There was a businessman from Kanungu who owned tea factories and openly supported the FDC. He said government pressure, including heavy taxes, was used against him, yet he maintained his political stance.

Today, many people are content as long as they can afford rent in Najjera, drive a Subaru, and have a comfortable lifestyle. Their attitude is, “As long as I’m enjoying life, everything is fine.” 😂😂😂
