Understanding how cartilage cells respond to physical forces is essential for developing better treatments for joint diseases and tissue regeneration.
Researchers blended two well-known biomaterials, agarose and collagen type I, to create a new hydrogel for investigating how cartilage cells respond to mechanical forces. They discovered that adding collagen preserved the hydrogel’s strength while supporting cell growth, maintaining structure, and sustaining glycosaminoglycan production over 21 days in culture.
The findings point to a promising platform for probing how cartilage cells sense and respond to mechanical signals – a critical step toward engineering functional cartilage.
