Govt Must Withdraw Decision to Close 10 Co-optex Outlets: It Should Not Betray Weavers After Making Promises!

Reports that the government has ordered the closure of 10 Co-optex outlets operating in cities including Cuddalore, Salem, Vellore and Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, as well as in cities in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, are shocking. It is distressing that Co-optex outlets, which were established to improve the livelihoods of handloom weavers and sell handloom products, are being closed one after another.

It is said that the decline in sales and revenue, along with staff-reduction measures, are the reasons behind this decision. As part of this decision, some outlets have already been closed. At some other outlets, sales have been stopped, while procurement has been halted at the remaining outlets. It is reportedly expected that all 10 outlets will be closed within the next few weeks.

Co-optex outlets are closely intertwined with the livelihoods of weavers. Co-optex is the trade name of the Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers’ Co-operative Society. Established in 1935, Co-optex outlets were once the preferred clothing stores of government employees, weavers, the poor and the middle class. However, the present crisis is the result of the systematic weakening of Co-optex for the benefit of private companies.

In 2025-26, Co-optex operated a total of 200 outlets—133 in Tamil Nadu and 67 in other states, Gulf countries and Europe. Subsequently, during 2025-26, this number declined to 150. Another 10 outlets are being closed in the current year. If this situation continues, Co-optex, which is supposed to celebrate its centenary in 2035, could instead be pushed toward its closure. Therefore, immediate steps must be taken to safeguard Co-optex.

In the election manifesto released by the TVK government for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, it had promised: “ Vetri Thari (Victory Loom) showrooms will be established in every major city in Tamil Nadu. A dedicated e-commerce brand will be created to market the products made by Tamil Nadu’s weavers internationally.” This was listed under Aram 2 (8). It is not right to announce plans to open new outlets under the name “Victory Loom” while simultaneously closing existing outlets. This only demonstrates that there is no connection between the TVK’s words and its actions.

Weavers believed that their lives would improve if the TVK came to power. That belief contributed to the change in government. The weavers must not be betrayed after placing their trust in the government. I urge the government to withdraw its decision to close the 10 Co-optex outlets. New Co-optex outlets should be opened both in Tamil Nadu and in other states, and the organisation should be revitalised through modern marketing and sales strategies.

Karnataka Refuses to Release Water Despite Cauvery Authority's Order; Must Not Mortgage Tamil Nadu's Rights by Ignoring Its Sentiments!

Even after the Cauvery Water Management Authority directed Karnataka to release 3,500 cubic feet per second (cusecs) of water to protect the withering Kuruvai crop in Tamil Nadu, the Congress government in Karnataka has refused to comply. Instead, it is allegedly inciting people there to protest against releasing water to Tamil Nadu. Under these circumstances, Chief Minister Vijay's insistence that he will travel to Karnataka and hold talks with Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar is, in no way, beneficial to Tamil Nadu's interests.

The Karnataka government has already declared that it cannot accept the Cauvery Management Authority's directive to release water to Tamil Nadu and has decided to challenge the order through an appeal. Kannada organizations opposing the release of water have warned of a complete shutdown in the Cauvery basin districts to protest the decision. Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has also convened an all-party meeting on August 2 to discuss the issue.

All these actions by the Karnataka government and Kannada organizations are aimed solely at preventing the release of water to Tamil Nadu. When Karnataka is firmly determined not to provide even a single drop of water, what does Chief Minister Vijay hope to achieve by traveling there for talks? His visit will not secure even a single drop of water for Tamil Nadu. On the contrary, it may compromise Tamil Nadu's rights in the Mekedatu dam issue. Chief Minister Vijay must not commit such a mistake.

The Cauvery Management Authority has ordered Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water for 15 days to Tamil Nadu. This amounts to only about 4.5 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water over the next 15 days. This is merely one-tenth of the water Karnataka was required to release to Tamil Nadu during the months of June and July. Yet Karnataka is unwilling to release even this minimal quantity.

As of this morning, the four dams built across the Cauvery and its tributaries in Karnataka together hold 67.078 TMC of water. In addition, the total inflow into these four reservoirs is 25,644 cusecs. The Cauvery Management Authority has directed Karnataka to release only about one-sixth of this inflow. Complying with this order would not reduce the storage levels in Karnataka's reservoirs. Instead, with an estimated increase of 1.9 TMC per day, the combined storage would rise by approximately 28 TMC over the next 15 days. Despite this, the Karnataka government is unwilling to release even the limited quantity of water ordered for Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu's interests must be protected in the Cauvery dispute, and the proposed Mekedatu dam must be prevented. It is the position of the people of Tamil Nadu that the state government should not hold any negotiations with the Karnataka government on these issues. Chief Minister Vijay should not take any decision that goes against this sentiment. Therefore, he must abandon his proposed visit to Karnataka on August 3.
