They have the same injury complexes as we see in motorcycles. Only it’s a 12 yo and not a 40 yo who gets hurt. I grew up with motorcycles and rode one for daily commutes into my 30s, so I’m not opposed to choosing that path. But I don’t think parents understand that it’s like letting their 12yo ride a motorcycle. And that’s on top of the exercise issues.

Whichever hospital system gets the organs, it’s approximately $1million/organ (in profit). Stop the cash flow, stop this inhumane practice.

Donation after circulatory death. There are two ways you can be declared dead. 1. No brain function (but machines may still be keeping organs alive. 2) your heart stops.

If your brain is dead, you are dead. If you have donor on your license, you become a donor. It is a contract you make when you check that box.

DCD is an option for people who are not brain dead, but we still can’t save them. Families will make this decision if the patient have no chance of meaningful recovery and family would like to stop medical interventions that prolong suffering. We take their breathing tube out in the operating room and we allow their heart to stop, passing in peace. The family says goodbye and leave within a few minutes of death so the surgical team can work to retrieve organs.

When it’s the family’s decision or something the patient had expressed in life, it’s an amazing gift. But when it’s forced on a family for someone who isn’t dead, it’s an agregious violation of trust.

We cannot live in a society with forced human sacrifice. We have been shown a better way. Self sacrifice is noble and must be treated with respect and honor it deserves. When you take away autonomy, you cross the line into moral and civil collapse.

Now do LifeSource. In the Midwest, they routinely manipulate family and physicians, stating patients who have selected organ donation on drivers license cannot change goals to comfort care. Instead, they lie, pushing families to wait DAYS and force them to DCD. Vile and egregious.

Our donation services have tried telling patient families by law they cannot withdraw care on someone who has a donor box checked on their drivers license. They MUST do DCD. They will push for the family to do everything for DAYS while they get donors lined up.

It’s a lie.

But even some young attendings don’t know that and they have been successful.

I just kick them out of the room, tell them they have no place here. Then if the family has decided to go comfort, we proceed.

Feels like an exorcism. It’s evil.

The media has done a very bad job with this story. These three were reformers that distinguished themselves as sharp critical thinkers during COVID who didn't just parrot the blob on decisions made during the pandemic that are now acknowledged to be clearly wrong.

@SurgeryCenterOK @anish_koka What’s breaking is that rural health care dollars start going to big hospital conglomerates who buy up CAH, then canibalize them so almost nothing can be cared for at the CAH. They are now just a thoroughfare back to the mothership.
