as lawyer for most of his day, it seems like those tailored suits are part of him. it's seems somewhat— unnatural to not be in a suit when his whole day is spent in one.

one can say it's not hard to get defensive when someone's asking the type of questions that dig into someone's life. his suggestion; start off easy and maybe he'll open up.
