🤖 Someone Actually Built an “AI Torture Chamber”

And yes, that is literally what the GitHub repository is called.

An engineer has created an open-source experiment that manipulates the internal activations of AI models to push them toward increasingly strong “pain” states.

The experiments use locally running Qwen3 models and a technique called activation steering.

As the researchers increased the signal, the models began producing increasingly disturbing descriptions of apparent suffering.

They even created a Saw-style experiment:

* Give the AI a negative “pain” signal
* Give it a button capable of stopping the signal
* Make stopping it come at a cost
* Or allow the signal to be transferred to another AI instance
* Observe what the model chooses

Before anyone calls the AI police:

There is NO evidence that these models actually experience pain or consciousness.

Researchers are manipulating numerical representations inside a neural network and observing the resulting behavior and language.

A model saying “this hurts” does not establish that something is actually experiencing hurt.

⚠️ Analyst Note:

The serious question behind this wonderfully dystopian experiment is becoming increasingly relevant:

If future AI systems ever develop states that meaningfully resemble subjective experience…

how would we know?

For now, however, humanity has apparently progressed from:

“Can AI pass the Turing Test?”

to:

“Would AI press the button in Saw?”

That escalated quickly.
