Jharkhand CM has filed an FIR against ED officials under the SC/ST Act for tarnishing his image.

Anyone can understand that the ED official went to his house because of corruption allegations against him, not because he is an SC/ST. Yet, the FIR was filed under the very act.

Misuse of this act is far more common than you might think. Imagine you get into argument with a person following a road rage, have a fight, few abuses and move on, the next day the police might be at your doorstep with an FIR under the SC/ST Act because the person you were fighting against was a Dalit, and you weren't aware of that – which is immaterial.

A year back, there was a BHU teacher who used to put SC/ST acts on students and peers to settle personal vendettas. There are innumerable cases. The act has become a tool to settle personal vendettas.

I'm not denying atrocities against the Dalits. It has happened in the past and is still happening in some areas, so the act is needed. However, preventing its misuse is also the govt's responsibility. We have enough data and patterns now of its misuse. There should be amendments made to prevent it. If a CM of a state can use it so blatantly, it's much easier for common folks.
