The city of Machico, Madeira was allegedly named by the early Portuguese colonists after Robert Machin, a 14th C English adventurer, who eloped with noblewoman Anne d’Arfet before they came to a tragic end on the island.

In the 1870s and 1880s, “King” Usery was a cattleman in the Sonoran Desert. In 1892 he tried his hand as a highwayman, but was caught and sentenced to 7 years in prison.
